An important part of transitioning from school to the professional world is holding an internship. Career counselors and professors stress the importance of holding an internship, but it can be difficult to understand why you need an internship to be successful in your field. Although internship roles vary from company to company, there are three key things that they provide a student.

First, an internship provides you with experience. In your internship, you will learn all about being a PR professional. While assisting your supervisor, you will be able to learn from them and watch what they do. Whether you are writing emails, editing press releases or practicing your pitching skills, you are gaining vital knowledge that will help you in the future.
Second, an internship provides you with connections. Your supervisor and their coworkers are all people that you should get to know and network with. Public relations is all about relationships, and as an intern, you should begin to cultivate these important relationships. Your coworkers might know someone at the next company you apply to or a key reporter for your next pitch.
Third, an internship provides you with opportunities to move up in your field. If you do a great job in your internship, you have the potential to secure a full-time position for the company you interned for. Your internship provides you with the experience and connections you need to find opportunities to be successful as a PR pro.
Internships allow you to have a guided experience that teaches you how to be successful. You are able to learn and grow in your position, and eventually, you will be able to credit the skills you gained in your internship with future success!
If you have had an internship, leave a comment below about how it has helped you become more successful in your next job!
